Steel Producers / AK Steel Zanesville Works Honored with Three Safety Awards

Mar. 23, 2009
AK Steel’s Zanesville Works has received three awards for outstanding safety performance from the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation, division of Safety and Hygiene.

Awards included the Group Safety Award for having the lowest incident rate in the industrial group for 2008, and the 100% Award for operating the entire year of 2008 without a lost-time injury. Zanesville Works also received a Special Award for working 2,825,818 hours without a lost-time injury, from April 21, 2003 through December 31, 2008. The awards were presented at the Zanesville-Muskingum County Chamber of Commerce annual meeting, in conjunction with the Zanesville-Muskingum Industrial Safety Council.

"Congratulations to our Zanesville employees for their tremendous safety performance," said James L. Wainscott, AK Steel’s Chairman, President and CEO. "Especially noteworthy is their significant achievement of working over five years without a single lost-time injury."

During 2008, AK Steel logged a corporate-wide total recordable injury rate of only 0.28, which the company said is about 8 times better than the industry average of 2.33, according to data compiled by the American Iron and Steel Institute.

AK Steel produces flat-rolled carbon, stainless and electrical steels, primarily for automotive, appliance, construction and electrical power generation and distribution markets. The company employs about 6300 men and women in Middletown, Mansfield, Coshocton and Zanesville, Ohio; Butler, Pa.; Ashland, Ky.; Rockport, Ind.; and its corporate headquarters in West Chester, Ohio.

AK Tube LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of AK Steel, employs about 260 men and women in plants in Walbridge, Ohio, and Columbus, Ind. AK Tube produces carbon and stainless electric resistance welded (ERW) tubular steel products for truck, automotive and other markets.
