Steel Producers / AK Steel AK Steel Coke Plant to Receive 4th Consecutive Safety Award

Mar. 26, 2004

American Coke and Coal Chemicals Institute Max Eward Safety Award

Named for a former chairman of the institute's manufacturing, environmental, and safety and health committee, ACCI’s Max Eward Award recognizes the ACCCI-member coke plant with the best safety record.

Employees at AK’s Middletown coke plant—the winning facility for this year’s Max Eward Award—have worked for four years with zero lost-time injuries.

This marks the fourth consecutive year—and the sixth time in the past seven years—that the plant has earned ACCCI's highest safety honor. No other plant in the industry has won the award more times than the AK Steel facility.

AK Steel’s Middletown, Ohio, coke plant has again been selected to receive the Max Eward Safety Award from the American Coke and Coal Chemicals Institute (ACCCI). The award recognizes the ACCCI-member coke plant with the best safety record during 2003. Employees at the Middletown coke plant have worked for four years in a row with a record of zero lost-time injuries.

"We are proud of our Middletown coke plant employees whose outstanding safety performance earned this prestigious award," said James L. Wainscott, President and CEO of AK Steel. "This unprecedented achievement is the result of AK Steel's continuing commitment to safety and the dedication of employees to work safely each day."

Mr. Wainscott also noted that AK Steel's Ashland, Ky., coke plant finished second in the competition for the Max Eward award. He commended employees at the Ashland facility for their excellent safety record in 2003 as well.

Headquartered in Middletown, AK Steel produces flat-rolled carbon, stainless and electrical steel products for automotive, appliance, construction and manufacturing markets, as well as tubular steel products.
