March 14, 2007 — Nucor has awarded a contract to Danieli to upgrade its Birmingham bar mill.

Nucor’s goals for the upgrade are to improve plant operation and efficiency. In support of these goals, Danieli will install two heavy-duty ESS 685 cantilever roughing stands to the mill, as well as a new cropping shear and auxiliaries.

Installation of the new equipment, followed by startup, is targeted to take place during the next plant shutdown, which will occur between late December 2007 and early January 2008.

The mill, originally supplied by Danieli to the former Birmingham Steel in the early 1990s, produces #3 to #18 rebars, at rates of up to120 tons/hour. Birmingham Steel was acquired by Nucor in 2002.
