Process / Coke, Iron and Alternate Iron Production China Steel Blows in Revamped No. 1 Blast Furnace

Jun. 14, 2010
China Steel Corp. (CSC) held a blowing-in ceremony last week for the 4th campaign of No. 1 Blast Furnace.

No. 1 Blast Furnace was blown-out for revamping on January 10, 2010, completing the 13-year 3rd campaign, which begin in January 1997. No. 1 furnace produced 24.43 million tons of hot metal during the third campaign, significantly more than the 18.51 million tons of hot metal produced during its 11-year, 8-month 2nd campaign.

The scope of engineering for the 3rd campaign revamp, which was much wider and more complicated than its 2nd campaign revamp, included revamp of the shell, cooling stave, furnace inner lining and related improvements of facilities, as well as a comprehensive integrated control system for process automation, labor saving and computerization, etc.

Construction was substantial and difficult, especially in the dismantling and replacement of the blast furnace shell, replacement of the high-efficiency cooling stave, and thorough revamp of the cast house, etc. The revamp was planned by Iron-making Department, and constructed and executed by Plant Engineering & Maintenance Department, Electrical and Control Department, Steelmaking Department and contractors. China Steel credits the success of the 3rd campaign revamp to experiences accumulated during the previous six blast furnace revamps, as well as cohesive teamwork and the all-out efforts of China Steel employees.

The company expressed confidence in the comprehensive revamp of No. 1 Blast Furnace and its rebirth as a brand-new and advanced facility that holds the promise of good performance in the years ahead. Chairman Chia-Juch Chang presided at the blowing-in ceremony, which was attended by about 200 participants that included guests from customers, domestic and foreign suppliers, constructors, China Steel’s top management, chairmen from subsidiary companies, and labor union representatives.
