Process / Coke, Iron and Alternate Iron Production Severstal Idles Hot-end Facilities at Sparrows Point

Severstal announced the idling of its hot-end facilities at Sparrows Point in response to weakened market demand. The shut-down took effect July 25.
 
The company said the idling of it the facility’s blast furnace and steelmaking facilities would allow it to better optimize production capabilities and balance internal inventories. The company said the Sparrows Point hot-end facilities would resume operations once market conditions improve.
 
To ensure uninterrupted service of its customers, the Sparrows Point facility will continue to operate its hot strip mill and all finishing facilities, including the tin plating lines. 
 
Severstal North America, the fourth-largest steelmaker in the United States, specializes in the full range of the highest-quality light flat rolled products with fully integrated operations in Michigan, Maryland, Ohio, and West Virginia. A new state-of-the-art electric arc furnace operation in Mississippi serves the growing demand for steel in the southeastern United States. Severstal North America also has several joint ventures for the highest-quality coated products.
