SMS Demag to Supply Converter Steelworks for Dragon Steel
Dec. 1, 2006
Dragon Steel Corp. (DSC), Taiwan, has commissioned SMS Demag, Germany, to build a converter steelworks for carbon steel. The works will be erected immediately adjacent to the existing steelworks at the Taichung location.
The works will be built in two stages, with the first including the erection of plants capable producing 2.5 million tonnes of carbon steel per year. The second stage will bring the facility’s total annual capacity to 5 million tonnes.
The core of the works is formed by two 220-tonne converters that incorporate SMS Demag's patented lamella suspension system, bottom stirrers and a sublance with robot. SMS Demag’s scope of supply also includes the complete ferroalloy bin system, gas cleaning system with primary and secondary dust-collecting systems, and off-gas recovery facilities. SMS Demag will also supply all vehicles, ladles and slag pots, as well as the engineering for the concrete and steel construction work.
Under the umbrella of SMS metallurgy, SMS Mevac GmbH, Germany, will supply a duplex RH-TOP facility with hydraulic ladle-lifting device. This facility will be used to treat special steels for the automotive industry as well as transformer steels.
The first heat from the steelworks is likely to be tapped in January 2009.
Dragon Steel Corp. is 70% owned by China Steel, which is Taiwan's largest steel producer.
SMS Demag AG forms part of the Metallurgical Plant and Rolling Mill Technology Business Area of the SMS group. SMS Mevac manufactures secondary-metallurgical plants.
