EAF STEELMAKING HEADLINES

Process / EAF Steelmaking Horsehead to Process Nucor’s EAF Dust on Regional Basis

Dec. 24, 2007
Horsehead Corp. and Nucor Corp. have agreed to expand their existing commercial relationship to include Horsehead’s recycling of Nucor's EAF dust on a regional basis.

According to the new agreement, Horsehead will recycle EAF dust from three Nucor facilities located in the Carolinas over the next 12 years. Horsehead presently recycles EAF dust from several Nucor locations at existing regional recycling facilities.

Horsehead intends to build and operate a new regional recycling facility near Nucor's plants in the Carolinas in support of its new regional concept. Site selection and preliminary engineering for the new facility are underway.

“We are excited at the prospect of expanding our relationship with Nucor and delivering on our plan of recycling expansion,” said Jim Hensler, Horsehead’s President and CEO. “The construction of this new EAF dust recycling facility will allow us to service a larger share of a valued customer's business in a more cost-effective fashion while further reducing the cost of our feedstock materials.”

Horsehead Corp. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Horsehead Holding Corp., a leading U.S. producer of specialty zinc and zinc-based products. Headquartered in Monaca, Pa, Horsehead is also among the world's largest recyclers of electric arc furnace (EAF) dust. The company employs over 1000 people and operates six facilities throughout the U.S.
