EAF STEELMAKING HEADLINES

Process / EAF Steelmaking Danieli to Supply New Meltshop for Votorantim Group

Feb. 4, 2008
Votorantim Group, Brazil, recently contracted Danieli to supply a new complete meltshop capable of producing one million tonnes of billets per year. The plant, which is being installed as part of an expansion program for the company’s steel production operations, will be known as VMUR (Votorantim Metais Unidade Resende) and will be located in Resende (RJ).

For the new meltshop, Danieli will supply a 6.5-meter diameter FastArc™ EAF, ladle furnace station, six-strand continuous billet caster, scrap-bucket charging crane, and a hot metal ladle crane.

The FastArc EAF, which will be designed to tap 100 tonnes of liquid steel, will be served by a 95-MVA EAF transformer. To accommodate the poor availability of scrap in the region, the EAF will be equipped with a chemical energy package that is designed to handle up to 50% pig iron in the charge mix. The ladle furnace station, which will be equipped with inert roof, will be served by two ladle cars.

The six-strand, 8-meter radius, FastCast™ conticaster will be designed for the production of 150-mm square billets. The 150-tonne scrap bucket charging crane and 200-tonne hot metal ladle crane will both be designed and supplied by Danieli Centro Cranes.

Danieli will also supply a fume treatment plant to manage both primary and secondary fumes coming from the EAF and LF. In addition, Danieli Automation will supply the complete electrical and automation system package for the new plant.

Startup of the new facility is scheduled for Q2 2009.
