EAF STEELMAKING HEADLINES

Process / EAF Steelmaking Tenova Goodfellow Technology Commissioned at Evraz Claymont Steel

Apr. 28, 2010
Tenova Goodfellow has successfully closed another project at Evraz Claymont Steel with the commissioning of the EFSOP Holistic Optimization® technology on the company’s existing 160-ton electric arc furnace (EAF). Application of the technology provided automation of the fourth-hole damper and burn injector profile.

Final acceptance for project closure came in January 2010, which included sign-off on the new Enhanced Furnace Safety Module that was implemented in late 2009. The module proved the ability to detect abnormal water, such as snow in the charge bucket and a water panel leak.

The plant has defined and implemented appropriate levels of operator response to its process operation to improve the safe operation of the EAF.

Evraz Claymont Steel, a division of Evraz Inc. NA and located in Claymont, Del., is a carbon plate mini-mill specializing in the manufacture and sale of custom-order discrete steel plate in the United States and Canada. With an annual capacity of more than 500,000 tons, Claymont Steel’s facilities are specifically configured to provide low-cost steel plate in small order sizes and nonstandard dimensions. Its markets extend through the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Tenova Goodfellow Inc., headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario, is the “centre of excellence” for process control technology development within the Tenova Group of companies. The company delivers integrated solutions that improve the energy efficiency of its customers. Goodfellow EFSOP® technology is a leading off-gas-based process control system for EAFs. It measures and analyzes EAF off-gases (CO, CO2, H2, O2) continuously at the fourth-hole for real-time, closed-loop process control of EAF steelmaking, resulting in improved operations, energy savings, lower conversion costs, and safety benefits.

Tenova designs and supplies advanced technologies, products, and services for the metal and mining industries. The company operates close to its customers through a network of 33 companies based five continents.
