EAF STEELMAKING HEADLINES

Process / EAF Steelmaking Tenova to Supply High-Capacity Consteel EAF for new Feida Steel Plant in China

May 3, 2010
Beris-China recently awarded a contract to Tenova for the supply of a 250 ton per hour Consteel® EAF to be installed as part of Feida Group’s new Steel Plant in the Jangsu Province in China.

The new furnace will have a 330 ton total capacity and a tap weight of 220 tons for an average production capacity of 250 ton per hour. It will be equipped with a 150-MVA transformer and will be characterized by the remarkably high productivity of nearly 2.5 ton per MW. The EAF’s charge mix will comprise scrap combined with a small percentage of pig iron.

Beris-China selected the Consteel® solution for Feida Group’s new steel plant in light of the technology’s limited electric energy requirement as well as its environmental advantages, a particularly important factor in the Jangsu Province, which is a growing residential area. The company had also evaluated a solution based on two mid-size conventional EAFs, which would have required more space, higher initial investment, and higher ongoing production costs.

Downstream equipment for the new Consteel EAF will include a twin ladle furnace, provision for vacuum degassing and a continuous slab caster. The new plant is scheduled to start operations in May 2011.

Tenova designs and supplies advanced technologies, products and services for the metals and mining industries. Tenova operates close to its customers through a network of 33 companies based on the 5 continents.
