Environment and Sustainability Tata Steel Active on World Environment Day

Jun. 8, 2010
Tata Steel observed World Environment Day at Jamshedpur and all its operational locations, keeping with this year’s global theme, “Many Species. One Planet. One Future.”

At Jamshedpur Works, the day included a tree plantation by Gautam Mukherjee, prominent citizen and speaker, A M Misra, Vice President (Coke, Sinter & Iron and Industrial Relations), and Raghunath Pandey, President, Tata Workers’ Union.

Mukherjee, addressing a gathering of senior executives, Union representatives, and other employees at the Steelennium Hall inside Steel Works, stressed the need for industries such as the steel industry to invest in R&D to find newer methods to reduce consumption of all inputs to address the climate change challenge.

The tree plantation drive also took place in the city under the guidance of Tribal Culture Society (TCS), Tata Steel, and JUSCO. TCS planted more than 100 saplings in its vicinity and aims to plant a total of 1500 saplings with the help of Primitive Tribal Group village members. JUSCO took the opportunity to unveil a park at Kagalnagar, Sonari, for the local residents.

The Tata Steel Family Initiative Foundation organized a rally of all families who have contributed to check global warming in an effort to involve the local community in its activities. The company’s Urban Services planted more than a 130 saplings across all its community centers to mark the day.

The Raw Material Divisions of Tata Steel also observed the day. West Bokaro, Jharia, and Noamundi divisions involved participation of school children to ensure that all its citizens formed part of the awareness drive.

Tata Steel unveiled its “Greenfection” campaign to spread the green message to the people of India through TV and other mass media, as well as rolling out its “You click and we plant a tree” campaign nationwide.
