ISSF Announces 2012 Sustainability Award Winners
May 21, 2012 - The International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF) has announced the three winners of its 2012 Sustainability Award: Aperam (France), Nippon Metal Industry Co., Ltd. (Japan), and Taiyuan Iron & Steel Group Co. Ltd. - TISCO (China).
Nucor Facilities Receive Environmental Awards
May 7, 2012 - Vulcraft-Texas and Century Industrial Coatings have been honored with the 2012 Texas Environmental Excellence Award for reducing VOC emissions. Nucor Steel-Berkeley has been awarded the South Carolina Manufacturers Association's "Made in SC Excellence in Corporate Responsibility Award."
ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe Starts up Dust Collection System
May 3, 2012 - ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe has started operation of an additional 30-million-euro dust collection system on the sinter belts at its Schwelgern plant unit, which is intended to further reduce particulate emissions in the north of Duisburg by up to 3 micrograms per cubic meter.
ThyssenKrupp Nirosta Permitted to Dispose Slag at Marbach Landfill
Apr. 13, 2012 - ThyssenKrupp Nirosta has received permission from Hagen environmental agency to continue to operate and increase the capacity of the Marbach landfill in Bochum-Hamme. The approval notice allows the company to dump slag from its neighboring Bochum stainless steel mill.
Severstal Projects Approved to Receive Financing under Kyoto Protocol
Apr. 10, 2012 - The Ministry of Economic Development has approved several of ОАО Severstal’s environmental projects to receive financing under the Kyoto Protocol.
ArcelorMittal Ostrava Cuts Annual Solid Emissions by 40%
Apr. 5, 2012 - ArcelorMittal Ostrava cut its emissions of solid pollutants by 40% over the past year, releasing 669 tonnes of dust particles into the air in 2011. A program of environmental investments worth close to three quarters of a billion Czech crowns was started this year that will cut sulfur dioxide emissions from its coking and steel plants.
Cherepovets Steel Mill to Increase Environmental Investments in 2012
Apr. 3, 2012 - ОАО Severstal announced that its Cherepovets Steel Mill plans to increase investments in environmental activities in 2012 to 1.25 billion rubles (more than US $42 million), about 57% more than last year.
Siemens to Supply Secondary Dedusting for Ruukki Steelworks in Finland
Mar. 28, 2012 - Siemens VAI Metals Technologies has received an order from Ruukki Metals Oy to supply and install equipment for a new secondary dedusting system in its converter steelworks in Raahe, Finland. The new system is scheduled to come into operation at the end of 2013.
Cherepovets Mill to Achieve Wastewater Discharge Reduction by 2013
Mar. 27, 2012 - ОАО Severstal announced that its Cherepovets Steel Mill will achieve a 200,000-m3 wastewater discharge reduction into bodies of water by 2013, by closing down two of the five current effluent discharge outlets.

Cherepovets Steel Mill Reduces Energy Consumption by 25%
Mar. 19, 2012 - ОАО Severstal’s Cherepovets Steel Mill has reduced specific steelmaking energy consumption to 5.620 Gcal per tonne, down 25% from 1999 levels, the launch year of the company’s energy-saving program.
Ellwood Quality Steels Settles Hazardous Waste Violations at New Castle Facility
Mar. 9, 2012 - Ellwood Quality Steels has agreed to pay a $150,000 penalty to settle alleged violations of hazardous waste regulations at its manufacturing facility in New Castle, Pa.
Tenova Re Energy to Supply Hyundai Steel with Irecovery Systems for Two EAFs
Mar. 7, 2012 - Tenova Re Energy has signed a contract with Hyundai Steel for the supply of two iRecovery systems for the company’s plant in Incheon, South Korea. They will help to recover lost heat from the off-gases of a 90-ton EAF and an 80-ton EAF.

ArcelorMittal Ostrava Donates Waste Heat to Neighboring Town
Feb. 27, 2012 - ArcelorMittal Ostrava reports that around 500 households in the town of Vratimov, which has a population of nearly 7000 inhabitants, are heated ecologically by its waste heat. As a result, Vratimov was able to shut down all of its boiler stations burning fossil fuels.
Siemens Delivers Secondary Dedusting System for Severstal Converter
Feb. 22, 2012 - Siemens VAI Metal Technologies received an order from OAO Severstal to install a secondary dedusting system in the converter steelmaking plant at the Cherepovets production site. The new secondary dedusting system is scheduled to go into operation in mid-2015.
Vale Approves 'Clean AER' Project
Feb. 21, 2012 - Vale has approved a $2 billion investment in the "Clean AER” (atmospheric emissions reduction) Project, which will see sulfur dioxide emissions at Vale's smelter in Sudbury, Ont., reduced by 70% from current levels. Project completion is estimated near the end of 2015.
