Tenova Core to Revamp Charlotte Consteel System for Gerdau Ameristeel
Jan. 11, 2011 Gerdau Ameristeel recently contracted Tenova Core to provide a major revamp of the existing Consteel® system at its Charlotte, North Carolina plant.
The project scope comprises the installation of newly designed preheat pans and preheat hoods to reduce the refractory maintenance of the conveying system. In addition, the current water seal system will be replaced with a dry seal system, and Tenova Core will also revamp the connecting car that joins the EAF to the conveyor.
Consteel, a continuous steelmaking process, preheats and feeds scrap and other raw materials directly into the EAF through the furnace sidewall via a patented conveying system. Originally supplied in 1989, the Charlotte plant’s Consteel system represents the first commercial installation of the technology. More than 20 years of production since its installation have helped to prove the durability and reliability of the Consteel technology.
There are over 35 Consteel installations worldwide that collectively produce over 30 million tons of steel per year on a worldwide basis.
