Steel Producers / Hylsa Techint Goodfellow to Install EFSOP System at SMI Meltshop

Dec. 15, 2005

Structural Metals, Inc. (SMI Texas) has placed an order with Techint Goodfellow Technologies Inc. (TGTI), Mississauga, Ont., for a state-of-the-art Goodfellow EFSOP (Expert Furnace System Optimization Process) system. Techint Goodfellow Technologies will install and commission the system on SMI’s 120-ton EAF at their meltshop in Seguin, Texas.

SMI’s new Goodfellow EFSOP system will measure and analyze EAF off-gases continuously at the fourth hole for real-time closed-loop process control. It is a clean technology which provides environmental and economic benefit to steel production. Techint Goodfellow says the technology will also result in improved operations, energy savings, lower conversion costs and safety benefits.

This represents the fifth Goodfellow EFSOP installation in the U.S.A. market.

SMI–Texas is one of the world’s most modern and productive steel mini-mills. Operating from a plant site of approximately 140 acres in Seguin, Texas, SMI operates around the clock, seven days a week in making, fabricating and distributing steel. SMI – Texas is part of Commercial Metals Co. (CMC), a Fortune 500 company headquartered in Irving, Texas. CMC manufactures, recycles and markets steel and metal products and related materials around the world.

Techint Goodfellow Technologies was recently founded in Mississauga, Ont., Canada, and integrated as a member of Techint Technologies, the plantmaking division of Techint Group. The company has a singular focus: to deliver the highest quality, most technologically advanced industrial equipment for the markets that we serve. The Techint Group manages Tenaris (Dalmine, Siderca, Tamsa, NKK Tubes, Algoma Tubes, Silcotub and Confab) and Ternium (Siderar, Sidor and Hylsamex).
