AISI: Preliminary Steel Imports Increase 4% in April
May 24, 2013 - Based on preliminary Census Bureau data, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported that the U.S. imported a total of 2,680,000 tons of steel in April, including 2,087,000 tons of finished steel (up 4% and 1%, respectively, vs. March final data).
AISI Announces 2013 Institute Medal Winners
May 24, 2013 - The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) awarded its highest technical award, the 2013 Institute Medal, to four industry authors for their winning paper, “Effects of Deformation Behavior and Processing Temperature on the Fatigue Performance of Deep-Rolled Medium Carbon Bar Steels.”

May 24, 2013 - The International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF) has elected new office bearers during the organization’s 17th Annual Conference (ISSF-17) which was held in New Orleans, La., from 15–16 May.
USW Urges New York MTA to Reconsider Rebuilding Bridge with Domestic, Not Chinese Steel
May 23, 2013 - United Steelworkers (USW) international president Leo W. Gerard wrote to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), questioning its decision to use 15,000 tons of steel, all sourced from China, to rebuild the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.
GE and Manufacturing Institute Expand Skills Training Program for U.S. Veterans
May 23, 2013 - GE, in collaboration with the Manufacturing Institute and the National Association of Manufacturers, announced that 190 new manufacturers have joined the Get Skills to Work (GSTW) coalition. The increase of employers participating in the initiative will further expand career opportunities for U.S. veterans in advanced manufacturing.
AISI Applauds Presidential Executive Order on Infrastructure
May 22, 2013 - The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) sent a letter to President Obama applauding his recent signing of Presidential Memorandum implementing Executive Order 13604 to expedite the approval process for infrastructure projects in the U.S.
World Crude Steel Production Up 1.2% in April
May 22, 2013 - World crude steel production for the 63 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) was 132 million tonnes in April 2013, an increase of 1.2% compared to April 2012.
Steel Industry Calls on EU for Life Cycle Approach to Vehicle Emissions
May 22, 2013 - As negotiations on the EU review of the CO2 emissions from cars regulations begin today, the steel industry is calling upon the Council to uphold Parliament’s amendment acknowledging the importance of a life cycle assessment in emissions legislation after 2020.

AISI: Import Market Share in U.S. at 23% in April
May 1, 2013 - The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported that steel import permit applications for the month of April total 2,576,000 tons. This was a 3% decrease from the 2,650,000 permit tons recorded in March but up by 4% from the March preliminary imports total of 2,476,000 tons. 
USW, ArcelorMittal Resolve Burns Harbor Safety Dispute
Apr. 26, 2013 - A safety dispute that idled blast furnaces and some other operations at ArcelorMittal's Burns Harbor mill has been resolved after two days of intense negotiations between union officials and management, the Northwest Indiana Times reports.
