Russula Starts up Water Plant for Nucor Connecticut Wire Rod Mill
Apr. 20, 2009 Russula Corp. has received acceptance from Nucor Steel Connecticut, Inc. for the new water treatment plant that Russula provided for the facility’s wire rod mill.
Rated for 6000 gpm, the new water treatment plant provides the mill with clean cooled process water. The main components include twin decanting basins, ring filters and modular cooling towers. Sludge from the decanting basins passes through a thickener then is formed into bricks by a press pack filter. An oil skimmer removes any oil and grease, and the ring filters are self cleaning.
In addition to having full responsibility for the complete mechanical and electrical supply, Russula also provided detailed civil designs for the installation, including the embedded rebar and conduits. Russula also provided extensive installation advisement, commissioning and training.
The new water treatment plant employs a unique technology that helps to ensure the provision of clean cooled water to the mill. The cooling water helps to provide extended roll life and reduce chemical costs. Russula said that initial results indicate that the mill’s roll life has at least doubled.
Russula is an independent engineering company specializing in upgrades and modernization projects for the steel industry with major offices in Spain, Brazil, Argentina and Atlanta, Ga. Although Russula has a history of water treatment technology installations throughout Europe and South America, this is Russula’s first water treatment installation in North America.
