Process / Long Products Rolling Friedrich Kocks to Install 3-Roll RSB for Bhushan Power & Steel

May 5, 2009
Bhushan Power & Steel Ltd., India, has placed an order with Friedrich Kocks GmbH & Co. KG, Germany, to supply a state-of-the-art wire rod and bar mill to be installed adjacent to Bhushan’s new integrated steel plant in Jharsuguda in the state of Orissa. The installation will help o complete the last stage of the company’s phase II expansion program.

The combined 500,000 tonnes/year wire rod and bar mill will feature a latest-generation Kocks 3-roll Reducing & Sizing Block [RSB] as its core technology.

Kocks’ scope of supply comprises design, supply, erection and commissioning of a 4-stand 3-roll RSB with a nominal roll diameter of 370 mm. The Reducing & Sizing Block will be designed for a possible future extension to five stand positions; it will be implemented after stand No. 18 of the two-high roughing and intermediate mill. As a finishing block, the RSB will roll finished straight bar lengths ranging in diameter from 16.0 to 80.0 mm and hexagons ranging from 18.25 to 50.0 mm onto the cooling bed as well as 16.0- to 60.0-mm diameter bar in coils. As a pre-finishing block, the RSB will be capable of producing all necessary pre-sections for the downstream wire rod finishing block.

The mill will feature an extended ‘free-size’ range of up to ± 1.5 mm from the nominal size that will allow a variety of sizes to be rolled with the tightest tolerances using only remote adjustment of stands and guides. The Bar Mill Configuration System (BAMICON) will calculate optimum adjusting values for motor speed, rolls and guides as well as gear steps based on the final product. Adjustments will be carried out automatically within a maximum of one minute to facilitate trouble-free, economic production of high-quality bar.

When the finished dimensions exceed the ‘free-size’ range, stands can be changed in less than five minutes using the mill’s quick stand changing system. Together, the systems facilitate rolling of any size without restrictions using a minimum number of roll sets and stand changes.

In order to meet the quality demands of a most modern rolling mill with optimum economy, BHUSHAN POWER & STEEL Ltd. as the first company in India has decided with a perspective for the future for the trend setting RSB-technology.
