Process / Long Products Rolling ShanDong Fulun Orders High-Speed Wire Rod Mills from SMS Meer

Jun. 3, 2010
ShanDong Fulun Iron & Steel Co. Ltd., of Laiwu City, China, has placed an order with SMS Meer for the supply of two high-speed wire rod mills. Each mill achieves an annual capacity of 700,000 tonnes of wire rod. The wire rod diameters range from 5.5 to 25 mm and the diameters of the rebars from 6 to 14 mm.

A range of steel grades will be rolled on the mills, including carbon steel and cold heading grades, spring steels, welding wire and ball bearing steels, and stainless steels. SMS Meer says that all final sizes can be finish-rolled at low temperatures and with close tolerances.

The wire-rod finishing trains are each equipped with a six-stand and a four-stand block. This concept from SMS Meer is already in operation in four wire rod mills.

The scope of supply also includes water cooling sections, loop cooling conveyors with either delayed or accelerated cooling, loop laying heads, and CCT® (Controlled Cooling Technology).

The mills are scheduled to go into service in mid-2011.

SMS Meer GmbH is a company of the SMS group, which is, under the roof of the holding SMS GmbH, a group of companies internationally active in plant construction and mechanical engineering for the steel and nonferrous metals industry. It consists of the two business areas, SMS Siemag and SMS Meer. In 2009, some 9000 employees worldwide generated a turnover of more than EUR 3.8 billion.
