Danieli Micromill Started Up at CMC Arizona
Feb. 10, 2010 Commercial Metals Co.’s CMC Steel Arizona in Mesa, Ariz., has started up a new generation of Danieli continuous casting-rolling micromill.
CMC Micromill has a rated capacity of 300,000 tonnes per year of 12- to 36-mm rebar and Y sections, though it is said to be capable of producing up to 57-mm bar. Plant startup occurred a little over one year from groundbreaking.
The mill makes use mainly of local scrap, and it supplies CMC’s local fabrication shops as well as the Southwest market.
Danieli says that the mill is characterized by a single-strand continuous casting-rolling process featuring ultra-high-speed “PowerMould” caster, in-line bar quenching and tempering and direct rolling-bundling system in a compact layout. The plant does not include a billet reheat furnace.
The acceptance testing phase is near completion. The learning curve is expected to be completed by early summer of 2010 as the mill staffing is completed and full hours of operation are achieved.
