North America ArcelorMittal USA Again Receives Energy Star Honor

Mar. 10, 2010
ArcelorMittal USA was recently selected, for the third consecutive year, as a 2010 Energy Star® Sustained Excellence Award winner for Energy Management.

Each year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy honor organizations that have made outstanding contributions to protecting the environment through energy efficiency. In 2008, ArcelorMittal became the first steel company to achieve this distinction.

“Despite difficult operating conditions, our U.S. facilities remained diligently focused on improving energy management during 2009,” said Mike Rippey, President and CEO, ArcelorMittal USA. “I commend our ArcelorMittal USA Energy Committee and employees for keeping energy a key focus area from the shop floor to the offices.”

During 2009, ArcelorMittal’s U.S. operations accomplished US$18.75 million in ongoing energy savings through several non-capital projects. The company also was recognized for the development of a formal procedure, “Energy Management at Reduced Production or Shutdown,” which was noted as a best practice and shared globally among ArcelorMittal plants.

ArcelorMittal says it also worked hard to spread the word about energy conservation—and the Energy Star program—to its employees, families, suppliers, customers, and the general public.

“As an industry leader, we must remain focused on maintaining operational excellence while reducing energy intensity,” said Larry Fabina, Energy Team Leader, ArcelorMittal USA. “Our focus on energy reduction is an ongoing process, demonstrating our commitment to sustainability.”
