Total stainless steel imports reached 83,832 tons for YTD February 2010, a 32.2% increase compared to YTD February 2009 according to the latest report from the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA).
Total specialty imports (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) reached 106,500 tons through the same period, a 14.2% increase compared to YTD February 2009.
Data included in the SSINA report reflect U.S. consumption, imports, and import penetration for YTD February 2010 compared to the same 2009 two-month period for major specialty steel product lines, as well as for total stainless steel and total specialty steel.
Stainless steel sheet/strip YTD February 2010 imports were 51,249 tons, a 50.3% increase compared to YTD February 2009. U.S. consumption was 200,758 tons through the same period, a 40.2% increase, while two-month import penetration was 25.5%, a 1.7 percentage point increase from 2009.
Stainless steel plate YTD February 2010 imports were 10,227 tons, a 30.0% increase compared to YTD February 2009. U.S. consumption was 37,610 tons through the same period, a 33.6% increase, while two-month import penetration was 27.2%, a 0.7 percentage point decrease from 2009.
Stainless steel bar YTD February 2010 imports were 11,912 tons, a 17.2% decrease compared to YTD February 2009. U.S. consumption was 27,584 tons through the same period, a 3.9% decrease, while two-month import penetration was 43.2%, a 6.9 percentage point decrease from 2009.
Stainless steel rod YTD February 2010 imports were 3,763 tons, an 86.4% increase compared to YTD February 2009. U.S. consumption was 9,385 tons through the same period, a 94.7% increase, while two-month import penetration was 40.1%, a 1.8 percentage point decrease from 2009.
Stainless steel wire YTD February 2010 imports were 6,682 tons, a 33.0% increase compared to YTD February 2009. U.S. consumption was 8,586 tons through the same period, an 18.0% increase, while two-month import penetration was 77.8%, an 8.8 percentage point increase from 2009.
Through YTD February 2010, imports of total stainless steel (comprising the foregoing product lines) reached 83,832 tons, a 32.2% increase compared to YTD February 2009. U.S. consumption was 283,923 tons through the same period, a 33.9% increase, while two-month import penetration was 29.5%, a 0.4 percentage point decrease from 2009.
Alloy tool steel YTD February 2010 imports were 7,985 tons, a 13.1% decrease compared to YTD February 2009. U.S. consumption and import penetration were not calculable.
Electrical steel YTD February 2010 imports were 14,682 tons, a 29.0% decrease compared to YTD February 2009. U.S. consumption was 32,069 tons through the same period, a 40.4% decrease from YTD February 2009, while two-month import penetration was 45.8%, a 7.4 percentage point increase from 2009.
Imports of total specialty steel (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) in
YTD February 2010 were 106,500 tons, a 14.2% increase compared to YTD February 2009. U.S. consumption was 320,238 tons through the same period, a 17.2% increase, while two-month import penetration was 33.3%, a 0.8 percentage point decrease from 2009.
