North America Ryerson Opens New Mexican Service Center

Aug. 19, 2010
Ryerson Inc. has opened a new service center in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. The facility is expected to begin operations August 30, 2010.

The 56,000-square-foot Monterrey facility will serve as a general line service center and carry a range of carbon, aluminum, and stainless steel products in different shapes, similar to the product lines Ryerson stocks throughout North America.

"This is another major step forward that expands our service to the Mexican market and continues growing our presence inside the country," said Phil Wylie, President of Ryerson's Southwest region, who is responsible for the Monterrey operation. "The Monterrey facility further extends our current offerings and materials management capabilities to Ryerson's growing base of customers in northeastern and central Mexico.

"As demand has grown we have responded by investing in new facilities on both sides of the border," Wylie added. "We now serve customers throughout the entire border area and into central Mexico."

In 2008, Ryerson sold its stake in a joint venture with a Mexican steel distributor and started developing the ability to serve the Mexican market independently. In 2009, it established a location in Nogales, Mexicali, and opened a new facility in McAllen, Tex., to better service customers from the Laredo-Nuevo Laredo area down to Brownsville-Matamoros.

"North American and other global manufacturers continue to increase investment in Mexico, and the Monterrey facility allows us to better serve this important and growing customer base," said Matthias Heilmann, Ryerson's Chief Operating Officer. "We will continue to build our capabilities to serve the dynamic Mexican market."

Ryerson Inc., a Platinum Equity company, is a leading distributor and processor of metals in North America. The company services customers through a network of service centers across the United States, Canada, Mexico, and China. It has served the Mexican market from the border states of Texas, Arizona, and California for many years.
