Safety OSHA to Recognize Nucor for Safety and Health Excellence at Norfolk

Sep. 10, 2007
Nucor Corp.’s Norfolk, Neb., facility has earned membership into the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA’s) prestigious Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) at the "merit" level.

"Nucor Steel Corp. has exhibited excellence in safety and health management," said Charles E. Adkins, OSHA's regional administrator in Kansas City, Mo. "The company's outstanding efforts have included management commitment to safety and health and employee involvement in safety and health programs."

A ceremony to recognize the Norfolk facility’s achievements will be held on September 11.

More than 1790 worksites in more than 270 industries nationwide have earned entry into OSHA's VPP. Requirements include
  • High degree of management support and employee involvement
  • High-quality worksite hazard analysis
  • High-quality prevention and control programs
  • Comprehensive safety and health training for all employees

Each of these elements must be effective, in place and in operation for at least one year before a company can apply to join the VPP.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
