Safety AK Tube’s Walbridge Plant Honored for Safety Performance

May 21, 2008
AK Steel announced that AK Tube’s Walbridge, Ohio, plant has been honored for its safety performance with two awards from the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation, division of Safety and Hygiene.

The facility was awarded the 100% Award for operating the entire year of 2007 without a lost-time injury. The facility was also honored with the Achievement Award for logging a 2007 OSHA incident rate more than 25% lower than the previous year.

“We congratulate our AK Tube Walbridge employees for their outstanding safety achievements in 2007," said James L. Wainscott, Chairman, President and CEO of AK Steel. "It is especially significant that they worked the entire year without a single lost-time injury."

Awards were presented at the Safety Council of Northwest Ohio's annual industrial safety awards banquet held on May 15, 2008.

Overall, AK Steel led the steel industry in safety during 2007 with a corporate-wide injury rate that was 12 times better than the industry average, according to data compiled by the American Iron and Steel Institute.

AK Steel produces flat-rolled carbon, stainless and electrical steels, primarily for automotive, appliance, construction and electrical power generation and distribution markets. The company employs about 6,500 men and women in Middletown, Mansfield, Coshocton and Zanesville, Ohio; Butler, Pa.; Ashland, Ky.; Rockport, Ind.; and its corporate headquarters in West Chester, Ohio.

AK Tube LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of AK Steel, employs about 300 men and women in plants in Walbridge, Ohio, and Columbus, Ind. AK Tube produces carbon and stainless electric resistance welded (ERW) tubular steel products for truck, automotive and other markets.
