Safety Three ArcelorMittal Stainless Sites Achieve Zero Accident Milestones

Jul. 27, 2009
ArcelorMittal celebrated the recent achievement of safety milestones by ArcelorMittal Ústí in the Czech Republic, ArcelorMittal Firminy in France, and ArcelorMittal Sersheim in Germany.

ArcelorMittal Ústí in the Czech Republic, with 220 employees, celebrated the achievement of 3 years of production with zero lost-time accidents. ArcelorMittal Firminy in France with 100 employees and ArcelorMittal Sersheim in Germany with 120 employees both achieved 2 years of production with zero lost-time accidents.

These three facilities join a select group of ArcelorMittal plants that have achieved zero lost-time accidents for two years or more: Isbergues in France, with 650 employees and five years with zero accidents, and Pont de Roide, also in France, with 230 employees and six years with zero accidents. (Employment figures are for company personnel, excluding contractors).

The company said the milestones had been achieved as part of the Group’s 'Journey to Zero' safety improvement process. According to ArcelorMittal, key ingredients for the program’s success include:

  • The commitment and interest of everyone
  • Regular presence of management on shop floor
  • Regular communication and training
  • Self-respect, respect for others and shared vigilance
  • Safety meeting minutes and REX analysis
  • An involved and competent Health and Safety team
  • Safety PPE (personal protective equipment) worn at all times
  • A daily account of any change in working conditions
  • Systematic analysis of near misses
  • The implementation of specific tools (shared vigilance, safety minutes, etc.)
  • Sharing experience and tools with other sites
  • A strong and sustainable safety culture

In support of the continuing effort to achieve more tangible results toward improving safety performance, the Group is committed to acknowledging the efforts of sites that reach milestones in Journey to Zero as well as to following their best-case examples.
