Industry Suppliers / Siemens Siemens to Modernize Rod and Section Mill for Thai Steel Profile

Feb. 9, 2012
Thai Steel Profile Co. Ltd., Bangkok, has awarded a contract to Siemens VAI Metals Technologies to modernize the bar mill installed in their plant in Rayong.

Thai Steel Profile’s goals for the project are to extend the product range to include merchant bars and to further improve productivity. After the modernization, the Rayong rolling mill in will reach an annual capacity of around 400,000 tonnes of long products. In addition to reinforcement steel bars, the upgraded plant also will be capable of producing a wide range of rods with round and square cross-sections, flats and also angle and channel steels.

To further enhance product quality and to boost the degree of automation, Siemens will upgrade the mill train as well as the straight bar and coiled bar production. The mill train is being equipped with new Red Ring rolling stands, and some existing stands will be equipped with new motors, gearboxes and couplings. Loopers are also being added to the finishing line.

In the straight bar production, Siemens will install an inline tempering system as well as new cooling and finishing zones, including a cooling bed, cold shear, multi-strand straightener and a fully automatic magnetic stacker for sections. Siemens will also supply the complete mechatronics package for operating the stacker.

Siemens will equip coiled bar production with two Garrett coilers as well as equipment for unloading, transport and compacting of coils. Siemens is also responsible for monitoring the installation and commissioning.

The modernized long product rolling mill is scheduled to commence operation in mid-2013.
