Industry Suppliers / Techint Techint Goodfellow Commissions Two EFSOP Systems in South Africa

Sep. 1, 2006

Sep. 2006 — Techint Goodfellow Technologies Inc., Mississauga, Ont., has successfully commissioned two state-of-the-art Goodfellow Expert Furnace System Optimization Process (EFSOP) systems for Cape Town Iron & Steel Works (Pty) Ltd (Cisco).

One EFSOP system was installed at Cape Gate (Pty) Ltd., Vanderbijlpark, at the company’s Gauteng Province plant location, and one was installed at the company’s Cape Town Iron & Steel Works (Pty) Ltd., Kuilsrivier, at the Cape Town plant location.

The new EFSOP system will incorporate continuous off-gas based closed-loop process control of the EAF. It will continuously measure and analyze EAF off-gases (CO, CO2, H2, and O2) at the fourth hole for real-time closed-loop process control of EAF steelmaking. Techint Goodfellow Technologies says the new system will result in improved operations, energy savings, lower conversion costs and safety benefits.

Through full vertical integration, Cape Gate, a family-owned company, has, grown from a small wire netting manufacturing company in 1962 to a major producer of wire and steel products with its own source of raw materials. The company has set new standards and found innovative high-tech solutions for a broad spectrum of strategic market sectors, producing products that meet recognized international standards. In December 2000, Cape Gate underwent an EAF upgrade to enable the production of 465,000 tonnes of billets per year.

Cape Town Iron & Steel Works is a scrap-based minimill producing reinforcing billet and bar steel. Cisco has been operating successfully in its markets for some 40 years from its original site in Kuilsrivier, Cape Town, South Africa. Cisco is a wholly owned subsidiary of Murray & Roberts, a leading South Africa Engineer Contractor listed on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange. The leadership team and people of Cisco are committed to delivering steel that consistently meets international standards. The business enjoys a proud track record of service excellence to its customers and markets. Today Cisco produces some 250,000 tonnes of billets per year, some 160,000 tonnes of which are used for the manufacture of rebar with the balance exported.

Techint Goodfellow Technologies is a company founded in Mississauga Ont., Canada, and integrated as a member of Techint Technologies, the plantmaking division of Techint Group. The company has a singular focus: to deliver the highest quality, most technologically advanced industrial equipment.
