Outokumpu Supplies Quarto Plate for Nuclear Fusion Research
Dec. 23, 2011 - Outokumpu has won a tender to supply 350 tonnes of quarto plates for a fusion experiment project in Japan called JT-60SA. The stainless steel plates, made out of low cobalt 304, will be used in the cylindrical section of the cryostat, which is the hull surrounding the main components of the Tokamak reactor.

Dec. 22, 2011 - Mechel-Coke OOO has launched the reconstructed coke-oven battery #5, with all of its eight coke-oven batteries now operational. The battery’s annual capacity is 470,000 tonnes of coke, triple the unit’s capacity before it was halted for reconstruction.

Japan Fair Trade Commission Okays Integration of Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Metals
Dec. 15, 2011 - Nippon Steel Corp. and Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. have received from the Japan Fair Trade Commission a “Notification to the Effect that a Cease and Desist Order will not be Issued,” meaning the business integration of the two companies has been approved. The integration is scheduled to be fully executed on October 1, 2012.

Severstal to Accumulate 100% of Putu Iron Ore Project in Liberia
Dec. 13, 2011 - OAO Severstal’s indirect subsidiary Lybica Holdings B.V. has entered into a legally binding heads of terms agreement with Afferro Mining Inc. and its wholly owned subsidiary Mano River Iron Ore Holdings Ltd. for the purchase of 38.5% interest in the Putu Iron Ore Project.  Severstal currently holds the remaining 61.5% interest in Putu.

Dec. 12, 2011 - Kobe Steel, Ltd. plans to make capital investments of approximately 36 billion yen to enhance the hot-metal treatment capacity at its Kakogawa Works and Kobe Works and the heat-treatment capacity for steel plate at the Kakogawa Works.

ArcelorMittal Comments on 24-Hour Work Stoppages
Dec. 8, 2011 - Willie Smit, Management Committee Member and Executive Vice President, Head of Human Resources for ArcelorMittal Group, offered a statement on the European strikes, noting that the 24-hour production stoppage is limited to the four long carbon plants in Luxembourg and two flat carbon plants in Liege, Belgium, and Florange, France.

Tata Steel to Mothball Llanwern Hot Strip Mill

Dec. 1, 2011 - The SAIL-led consortium AFISCO (Afghan Iron & Steel Consortium) has won the status of “preferred bidder” for blocks B, C, and D of the mines with an estimated reserve of 1.28 billion tonnes of high-grade magnetite iron ore (with 62-64% Fe content).
Vallourec to Build Premium Threading Facility in Youngstown
Dec. 1, 2011 - Vallourec announced the advancement of two projects to strengthen its positioning to serve the OCTG markets of North America and the Middle East. In North America, the company will construct a new premium threading facility in Youngstown, Ohio, through its subsidiary VAM USA LLC. Mechel, BelAZ Sign Agreement for Long-Term Partnership
Nov. 29, 2011 - The long-term partnership agreement provides for supplies of BelAZ-produced mining dump trucks to Mechel’s enterprises, supplies of spare parts for those trucks, setting up production of cargo platforms for BelAZ mining dump trucks at Mechel’s plants, and certification of a Mechel subsidiary as one of BelAZ’s service centers in the Russian Federation.
