Posteel Opens New Pipe Plant in Oman
Mar. 19, 2010 - Posteel recently opened Gulf International Pipe Industry (GIPI), a new 250,000-tonne production facility specializing in API pipes based in Sohar, Oman. Posteel will supply 100,000 tonnes of hot-rolled coils annually to GIPI, which are needed to produce the pipes.
Harsco Expands Environmental Services to Baosteel
Mar. 18, 2010 - The Harsco Metals business group has been awarded an environmental services contract to deploy a new zero waste byproduct recycling service at Baosteel’s Ningbo integrated carbon steelmaking facility in Zhejiang Province.
NLMK Launches Final Stage of Environmental Project
Mar. 18, 2010 - Novolipetsk Steel has begun the final stage of reconstructing the gas exhaust ducts at BOF Shop No.1 at its main production site in Lipetsk, the goal of which is to improve operational reliability and reduce the company’s environmental impact.

Mar. 18, 2010 - Siemens VAI Metals Technologies has received an order from CMC Zawiercie S.A. to equip a new bar mill with the Morgan XpertManager manufacturing execution system, which will enable the company to analyze operations, manage production, and optimize the mill’s throughput.
Tenova Core to Upgrade Reheat-Furnace Combustion System at Siam Yamato
Mar. 18, 2010 - Tenova Core will revamp the combustion system of the existing walking beam reheating furnace at Siam Yamato Co. Ltd’s plant at Maptaphut Rayong, Thailand. The project aims to reduce the amount of NOx being emitted through the furnace stack.
ArcelorMittal, Dayen to Build Rebar Plant in Northern Iraq
Mar. 17, 2010 - ArcelorMittal has announced plans to build an EAF-based rebar plant in Northern Iraq in partnership with Turkish partner Dayen.
Siemens VAI Names New Head of Long Rolling Business
Mar. 17, 2010 - Hubert Max Köbach has been named Chief Executive Officer of the Morgan Construction Co. and head of Siemens VAI Metals Technologies Long Rolling Business, replacing Philip R. Morgan on January 4, 2010. Morgan Construction was acquired by Siemens in April 2008.
NLMK Resumes Hot-Rolling Production Upgrades
Mar. 17, 2010 - NLMK Steel has resumed its upgrade of Continuous Reheating Furnace No.3. The project was launched in 2007 but was suspended due to the economic crisis.
Handan Iron & Steel Orders Combi-caster from Siemens
Mar. 16, 2010 - Siemens VAI Metals Technologies will supply a five-strand combi-caster to Handan Steel Works in China. The new plant will be capable of producing a total of 1.45 million tonnes of beam blanks and blooms per year.
Air Liquide to Build Air Separation Unit for Chinese Steel Producer
Mar. 16, 2010 - Air Liquide will invest about €40 million in Yichun, Heilongjiang Province, to supply Xilin Steel Group with oxygen, nitrogen, and argon. A 1200-tonnes-per-day Air Separation Unit will be designed and built by Air Liquide Hangzhou and is expected to be commissioned in Q1 2012.
Mechel Establishes Representative Office in China
Mar. 16, 2010 - Mechel OAO established its representative office in Chaoyang District, Beijing, on March 5 to support its business in China and cooperate on expansion in the country.
Outokumpu Restarts Operations in Röyttä Harbor in Tornio
Mar. 15, 2010 - Outokumpu announced on March 12 that the operations in Röyttä harbor in Tornio, Finland, have been restarted despite the stevedores strike. The loading and unloading of ships is being carried out with the help of subcontractors.
Danieli Supplies Equipment for “Twin” Wire Rod Mills in China
Mar. 15, 2010 - Danieli is supplying key equipment and technology for two high-speed wire rod mills, each with a capacity of 750,000 tonnes per year, under construction at Shangdong Laigang Yongfeng Steel for production of engineering and special steel wire rod in coils.
Baosteel Completes First Export Contract for Cold-rolled Stainless Steel
Mar. 15, 2010 - Coordinated by Baosteel Co., Ltd. Stainless Steel Business Unit and Baosteel America Inc., more than 120 tonnes of 304 stainless steel produced by the Baosteel Stainless Steel Cold Rolling Project mill that was recently put into production were shipped to the U.S. on March 7.
Danieli to Supply Equipment to Jianlong Group, Stefana Montirone
Mar. 12, 2010 - Jianlong Group Co., Ltd. has contracted Danieli CentroMet / Danieli Changshu Metallurgical Equipment and Service Co., Ltd. to supply a new conticaster for large-size rounds to be installed in its Chengde steel plant. Stefana Spa has also contracted Danieli for the supply of a FastCast CCM for production of billets, to be installed in its Montirone steelworks.
Siemens Supplies Equipment for Handan Bar and Wire Rod Mills
Mar. 12, 2010 - Siemens VAI Metals Technologies has received an order from Handan Iron & Steel Co. to supply mechanical equipment for a bar mill and a mill train for the wire rod mill. The project is scheduled to be completed by late 2010.
Magazine Names MMK-Atakas Finan?ing “The Deal of the Year”
Mar. 12, 2010 - MMK-Atakas project financing was selected by Trade Finance magazine as “The Deal of the Year.” According to the magazine, OJSC MMK put together a ground-breaking deal to secure financing for the MMK-Atakas flat steel making plant in Turkey.

SinoCoking Commences Construction of New Coking Facility
Mar. 12, 2010 - SinoCoking Coal and Coke Chemical Industries, Inc. recently broke ground on the construction of its new coking facility in Pingdingshan city, in Henan Province, China. The facility will have an anticipated maximum annual production capacity of 900,000 tonnes of coke.
Siemens Replaces LD Converters at CSN
Mar. 11, 2010 - Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN) has placed an order with Siemens for the replacement of two LD converters at its Volta Redonda location. Turnkey delivery of the converters is planned during the summer of 2011 and at the end of 2012, respectively.

Mar. 11, 2010 - Outokumpu has introduced a new comprehensive system of duplex pipes and fittings, called Outokumpu Duralite™ Piping System, to serve customers in a range of applications. Metso chose Duralite pipes in the lean duplex grade LDX 2101® to rebuild a pilot paper machine.
Ruukki Offers Strong, Weather-Resistant Structural Steel
Mar. 11, 2010 - Ruukki is launching Optim 960 QCW structural steel, a new grade that combines high strength and weather resistance. Optim 960 QCW is made using a direct quenching process developed by Ruukki and is suitable for applications such as containers, cranes, and booms.

Mar. 10, 2010 - Mechel OAO announces prolongation of credit facilities for its subsidiaries obtained earlier from Gazprombank. According to the amendment agreements, the credit maturity extends from three years to six years.

JSW Posts 69% Growth in Crude Steel Production

Ruukki Releases Report on 2009 Environmental Responsibility
Mar. 3, 2010 - Ruukki claims in its 2009 corporate environmental report that it made progress in the energy efficiency of production with the aim of achieving energy savings of 9%, compared to 2005 levels, by 2016. The company spent a total of EUR 21 million on environmental investments in 2009.

JFE Steel Acquires Stake in Vietnam's Sun Steel
Mar. 2, 2010 - JFE Steel Corp. has acquired 16.64 million shares, or 8%, of Sun Steel Joint Stock Co. (SUNSCO), a manufacturer of galvanized steel sheet and steel pipe in Vietnam. The shares were purchased from Maruichi Steel Tube Ltd.

ArcelorMittal Reacts to Kumba Iron Ore Supply Stoppage
Mar. 1, 2010 - Trading in shares in ArcelorMittal South Africa was recently halted. The company has received notification from Kumba Iron Ore that from March 1 forward it will not supply iron ore to ArcelorMittal from its Sishen iron ore mine under the terms of their 2001 supply agreement.

SMS Siemag Commissions X-Melt® Converter at Dragon Steel Meltshop
Feb. 26, 2010 - In January 2010, SMS Siemag successfully commissioned the first of two new carbon-steel converters at the Taichung works of Dragon Steel Corp. in Taiwan. The second converter is scheduled to be commissioned this spring.

Second Group of Posco Youth Volunteers Sent Off

Corus Confirms Price Increase on Forging Steels
Feb. 25, 2010 - Following Corus Long Products' price rise announcement in January, the company has confirmed a £60-per-tonne increase on the base price of forging steels on all products for delivery from April 5, 2010.

World Crude Steel Output Climbs Another 2.1% in January 2010
Feb. 23, 2010 - World crude steel production for the 66 countries reporting to the World Steel Association stood at an estimated 109.24 million tonnes in January 2010 — 2.1% higher than the previous month (December 2009) but about 26% higher than January 2009.

Feb. 22, 2010 - Rautaruukki has decided to discontinue operations at its Mo i Rana unit in Norway until further notice, affecting some 110 employees in the unit.
Andec, Kamastal Upgrade with Danieli Equipment
Feb. 22, 2010 - The upgrading of Andec-Acerias Nacionales del Ecuador steelworks in Guayaquil was completed in December with the start of operation of a new 25-tonne Danieli ladle furnace and the associated fume dedusting plant. A new Danieli secondary refining station also was installed as part of the modernization of the existing Kamastal Metallurgical Works Ltd. steelmaking facilities in Perm.

Feb. 22, 2010 - Posco recently signed the “Technological Support and Steel Products Supply Agreement for Mutual Cooperation of Large, Mid, and Small Sized Companies” with KOCEMA (Korea Construction Equipment Manufacturers Association) in Seoul.
Posco Confirms Executive Director Candidates
Feb. 19, 2010 - Posco recently held a board meeting to confirm Posco ICT CEO Han-yong Park, Vice President Chang-gwan Oh (Marketing Director), and Jin-il Kim (Head Manager of Pohang Steelworks) as executive director candidates. They will take the post following approval at the shareholders meeting scheduled for February 26.
LKAB Plans for Three New Iron Ore Mines
Feb. 19, 2010 - LKAB plans to open an open-pit mine at Gruvberget, near Svappavaara, during the first half of 2010. The company also plans to submit applications this year for a project to drain the Leveäniemi open pit, which was closed in the mid-1980s, and for test drilling at Mertainen.
Danieli Heavy Section Mill Selected for ESI Minimill Expansion
Feb. 19, 2010 - Emirates Steel Industry (ESI) has contracted Danieli for the completion of Phase 2 expansion of the minimill complex currently in operation in the Mussaffah Industrial Area, Abu Dhabi, with the installation of a new heavy section mill with a capacity of 1 million tonnes per year of large-size sections, beams, columns, and sheet piles.
Mechel Progresses in Development of Elga Coking Coal Deposit
Feb. 18, 2010 - At the beginning of February, two special heavy machinery convoys departed from the Upper Ulak station (Amur Region) where a Mechel OAO-owned construction base is located. The equipment, which is intended for development of Elga coking coal deposit, has reached the location of the new open pit mine construction.
Danieli Bar and Section Mill in Operation at Duferdofin-Nucor Giammoro
Feb. 18, 2010 - The new Danieli merchant bar mill was started up in November 2009 at Duferdofin-Nucor Giammoro, Sicily. The 20-stand high-speed continuous mill has a designed capacity of 700,000-tonnes per year of 8 to 25-mm-diameter deformed bars and a range of sections, rolled at rates of 100 tonnes per hour.
BSP Awarded as Best Integrated Steel Plant
Feb. 18, 2010 - Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP), the flagship unit of Steel Authority of India Ltd., has received the Prime Minister’s Trophy for emerging as the best-performing steel plant in the country for the years 2006-07 and 2007-08.
Posco Delivers Haiti Relief Funds
Feb. 18, 2010 - Posco delivered relief funds of USD300,000 for Haiti to the Korean National Red Cross President Yoo Chong-ha on February 10, along with a KRW 78 million donation collected from 9447 employees in online contributions between January 22 and 28.
Danieli Bloom Casters in Operation at Acciaierie Venete, RUE BMZ
Feb. 17, 2010 - A new jumbo-size conticaster for large-size blooms from Danieli has operated successfully since November 2009 at Acciaierie Venete, an Italian SBQ producer. Danieli Centro Met also carried out reconstruction and upgrading of the four-strand No. 3 bloom caster at the No. 2 steel melting shop of Byelorussian Steel Works (RUE BMZ) of Zhlobin, Belarus.
ArcelorMittal TB Zaragoza to Deliver Tailored Blanks for Opel Meriva
Feb. 17, 2010 - ArcelorMittal TB Zaragoza will deliver yearly around 1.2 million laser welded parts, or tailored blanks, representing around 18,000 tonnes per year of galvanized high-quality steel, for the new Opel Meriva.
