World Severstal's Cherepovets Mill Increased Strip Deliveries to Russian Pipe Makers in 2011

Feb. 3, 2012
OAO Severstal announces that its Cherepovets Steel Mill increased deliveries to Russian pipe-making companies in 2011 by 5%. A total of more than 700,000 tonnes of plate was produced on the wide-strip Rolling Mill 5000 at Severstal’s No.3 Sheet Rolling Shop in the Kolpino District, St. Petersburg.

The bulk (about 70% or 500,000 tonnes) of the products that came off the Rolling Mill 5000 were sent to the Izhora Pipe Mill, which specializes in the manufacture of large-diameter pipes from strips produced by the Cherepovets Steel Mill and is located in close proximity to the Rolling Shop.

The continuous production flow: slab (produced at the Cherepovets Steel Mill) to plate (made at the Rolling Mill 5000, Sheet Rolling Shop No.3) to pipe (manufactured at the Izhora Pipe Mill), has been operating in Kolpino since 2006.

Severstal notes that 2011 saw a dramatic increase in orders for the Chelyabinsk Pipe Rolling Plant. About 30,000 tonnes of plate was shipped to the enterprise in 2011, including bespoke and unique rolled plate for load-bearing pipes at a stadium in Kazan, which will be among the facilities used to host the 27th World University Summer Games in 2013 and the 2018 FIFA Football World Cup.

Andrei Lutsenko, Chief Engineer of the Severstal Russian Steel Division, said: “The order shipped for the Chelyabinsk Pipe Rolling Plant has enabled us to gain unique experience and develop our product range. In 2012 we will continue to update our technology and facilities, improve production efficiency, and develop the product mix.”

Deliveries to the Volzhsky Pipe Mill and Vyksun Metallurgical Plant also continued in 2011. Along with pipe makers, the consumers of the Rolling Mill 5000’s products include leading enterprises in the machine-building industry such as Uralmashzavod (the Uralmash Plant), Izhorskiye Zavody (Izhora Plants), Caterpillar TOSNO, and Siloviye Mashiny (Power Machines). These customers accounted for about 80,000 tonnes of products shipped in 2011.

Cherepovets Steel Mill is part of the Severstal Russian Steel Division and is one of the world's largest standalone integrated steelworks by capacity.

Severstal, one of the world’s leading vertically integrated steel and steel-related mining companies, combines the growth potential of Russia’s emerging market with the margin sustainability of an international steel producer. The company currently operates facilities in 10 countries and employs a workforce of 84,000.
