World ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih Recognized for Environmental Protection

Jan. 21, 2010
ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih has been named Environment Protection Leader 2009 within the “Ecology, environment, and nature management Ukraine” national project for consistently introducing modern environmentally friendly technologies and equipment.

In 2009, the impact of the company’s production activity on the environment was “significantly reduced.” ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih claims that during nine months of 2009, the volume of total emissions was reduced by 31%, the volume of basic waste was reduced by 53%, and the volume of effluent discharge was reduced by 58% compared to the same period of 2008.

The company says it achieved these results through environmental protection measures such as reconstructing the desulfurization shop with vacuum-carbonate coke oven gas two-stage hydrogen sulfide cleaning up to 0.5% g/m³. Other actions include capital reconstruction of the BF-8, including reconstruction of the aspiration installations of the cast houses and installation of the modern electrostatic precipitators.

In 2009, reconstruction of gas purifiers of the foundry-forging production was implemented, and modern high-performing bag filters were installed on the gas purifiers of all the electric arc furnaces.

“Sustainable development and growth is among the top priorities in our company’s strategy, and we will follow this strategy in the future,” said Liana Maksimenko, Director on Environment Protection, ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, upon receiving the award from the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection, Viktoria Shapoval.

“Ecology, environment, and nature management in Ukraine” is implemented annually as a joint initiative of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Ukraine and the Prestige MediaInfo publishing house.
