World Severstal Joint Ventures Create Stamping and Steel Center Facilities in Kaluga

Jul. 14, 2010
The Gestamp-Severstal-Kaluga Stamping Facility and the Severstal-Gonvarri-Kaluga Steel Center were commissioned in the industrial cluster of Grabtsevo, in the Kaluga Region of Russia.

The Severstal-Gonvarri-Kaluga Steel Services Center is designed to meet the demands of the automobile and electrical industries, as well as electronics and building-industry producers. The new facility will produce 170,000 tonnes of rolled metal products per annum. A total of 40 million euros was invested in this joint venture (JV).

The Gestamp-Severstal-Kaluga Stamping Facility, which will produce body components for the Volkswagen plant located in the same industrial zone, is equipped with a number of press lines. Gestamp-Severstal will create the entire chain of processing rolled metal products, from coil to car components. About 89 million euros were invested in this JV, of which 39.5 million euros were spent on purchasing equipment. The annual output is expected to reach 13 million stamped parts, with the main consumers being Volkswagen, PSA, and Renault-Avtoframos.

Severstal has already begun trial deliveries of metal produced at the Cherepovets Metal Complex to the steel center and stamping facility per Volkswagen specifications.

“Our program for cooperation with auto producers continues to develop rapidly. The new stamping facility and steel center represent a logical continuation of the program aimed at meeting our clients’ requirements,” said Anatoly Kruchinin, head of Severstal’s Russian Steel Division. “It should be noted that our stamping facility offers additional possibilities for production expansion, enabling us to promptly increase capacity if needed."
