Tata Steel Presents Dextro Energy Triathlon London
Jul. 26, 2010 Tata Steel was the presenting partner of the International Triathlon Union World Championship London in Hyde Park over the July 24-25 weekend.
The company notes it has a long association with the sport of triathlon through its subsidiary Corus, which is the corporate partner of the British Triathlon Federation. Over the past four years, nearly 25,000 children from across the U.K. have experienced the sport’s three disciplines—swimming, cycling, and running—through the Corus Kids of Steel mini triathlon series. Corus also has helped to develop paratriathlon as an internationally recognized sport.
The centerpiece of the Tata Steel VIP area featured collaboration between Tata Steel and S² Corp, which challenged teams of both architects and engineers to come up with a signature structure capable of temporarily transforming this key public space.
The brief called for a bespoke design that would showcase innovative steel design, but also show restraint in materials used. The result is a structure that uses post-tensioned steel, reportedly a first for temporary infrastructure in the U.K. The structure provides a wide-span space suitable for accommodating more than 200 VIP guests.
“Triathlon is a fast-growing, modern Olympic sport and the ITU World Championship event in London is an important addition to the sport’s global calendar. We are pleased to be involved in promoting this exciting sport in the U.K. through this major event, with its global standing in triathlon,” said Kirby Adams, Managing Director and CEO, Tata Steel Europe.
